Coming from enterprise product space, GullyBuy is proving to be a very different and refreshing experience. We are building a solution in retail space to enable convenient transactions between kirana stores and buyers. Why this, and not some complex, high technology product? Mostly because our co-founder, Swati Deodhar, decided that she wanted to improve her daily shopping experience :) There are 12-14 million local stores in India. Over 100 million users in India do grocery shopping almost daily. The buy/sell process between users and kiranas has remained unchanged for decades. The likes of Amazon, Flipkart, Reliance see this huge market, and are going all out to capture it with their technology and deep pockets. The retail space also has many startups, but when we looked closely, they don’t seem to be doing much for the kiranas. The tech world loves to talk about disruptive technology. But can you really bring rapid change to 100+ million buyers and 12 million stores staffed with 2-3 people in a < 500 sft shop? We think what is needed is a simple solution rather than a complex one, something that guides the kirana owners into the digital world at their own pace. At least that’s the thinking. Right or wrong - we will soon find out.
